Do you think that some coaches are CRIMINALS? Both professionals and clients are, at times, little aware of the possible consequences of their actions. And what about this other question: Are all coaches trustworthy?
Do coaches get paid a fair amount for what they actually offer? Think AGAIN!
A number of people do NOT understand PRINCIPLES. They only know how to circumvent the RULES. Moreover, PRINCIPLES are much more noble than RULES. Why you do not read more about their distinction on this page by Francisco Saez. Therefore, these same people will take advantage of a profession like coaching primarily based on PRINCIPLES. You better get to learn how to navigate through some of the fog and make sure that the bucks you invest give you an excellent return.
Again: Are some coaches CRIMINALS? There are criminals in every profession. And, after all, it is not that difficult to spot them. Even the most covert of them won’t take long to come into the spotlight. By the way, you need to be prepared to face/avoid/abandon them. Never try to fix crooks.
There are two sides of the moon. The wrong coach can do several damages to PhD students. Here they are:
1. To the future abilities of the student;
2. To the finances of the student;
3. And, to the reputation of the coaching industry overall.
There is also some sort of distorted view by some PhD students. Because some of them expect the coach to deliver another service. And this contributes in bending the noble work that a coach is supposed to do. This video tells you more about them. This video sheds some light on how to approach difficulties in understanding the role to play for both the coach and the PhD student.
On the ‘dark side of the moon’, there is evidence that coaching inside schools and universities might not deliver, as yet, the stated potential benefits. See more on this topic on this link: Faculty student coaching.
In conclusion, we cannot expect someone else to solve the problems. We need to take an active role and contribute substantially in solving the issues we are faced with. This goes for coaches as well as PhD students. REMEMBER: your entry into the marketplace is around the corner. Better use the remaining time of your PhD project to ‘pull the right punches.’
