I do not clearly know what can be done. However, if I were starting now my PhD with the internet age, I would DEFINITELY learn if a PhD is worth the money. And I would start from what I do know for sure. During the last century, there has been a rapid increase in population and even more rapid mechanization in the workplaces. This seems to have brought this ever-enlarging scissor between DEMAND and OFFER of work. The cruelty lays in the fact that some people know this quite well, and yet they do little or nothing to stop it.
