We are going to sanity check the 10,000 hour rule to become an expert in any specific field. PhD coaching is also about educating ourselves. You can find this in our latest video:
This rule was originally proposed by one of my favourite writers Malcolm Gladwell in his 2008 book Outliers: The Story of Success
In this monthly video, our PhD coaching efforts bring us to see that in principle at least, this rule is too strict for the typical duration of a PhD project (3 years). Working 8 hours a day for 6 days a week (which, by the way, is a lot) and for 47 weeks per year, makes over 2,200 hours. Multiplied for 3 years, gives around 6,600 hours. This is way shorter than the 10,000 hour rule proposed by Malcolm Gladwell.
However, you are a PhD and NOT ‘another’ worker. Therefore, we are going to show you with proofs that you can achieve the EXPERT level within the 3 years of your PhD project.
That is well below the 10,000 hour rule. And if you can make it, then you will demystify Gladwell’s rule!
Ready for the CHALLENGE?
Wait a second!
We might have missed something important here. Do you know what we missed?
Before looking too far away, think of what is right next to you. These are things and people you have a much better chance to influence and get things out from. Just because of the physical proximity and the fact that you know them already.
The aspect that we might overlook is that we are not ALONE in this quest to get a PhD degree. We have an infinitive source of help in our university and especially our PhD supervisor/s. You can also consider getting support and guidance from a PhD coaching expert. PhD coaching has the potential to unleash your hidden capabilities and make of you a truly exceptional researcher. Before you start thinking of how to approach this huge source of help, I suggest you watch this other video to have an idea about how much you can get from what you have already The PIVOTAL PhD student / supervisor
Watch this month INSPIRATIONAL video and I am pretty sure you will make it. Like I made it!
